Tips for Staying Motivated This Summer

Memorial day weekend is just around the corner! Whatever will motivate you to reach your fitness goals this summer is a little different for everyone. For some it’s a toned beach body, milestone event, or pie in the sky fitness goal. For others it might be recovering from an injury, getting back into fitness after a winter hiatus, or embarking on a fitness journey for the first time. Regardless of your personal circumstances, we have a few tips that will help you crush your summer goals.

First- Set a Goal!

The first step to achieving your goals… is actually setting a goal in the first place. In business, oftentimes the guidelines for setting a goal aligns to the SMART goal acronym. What is a SMART goal? It’s specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. Let’s put this into practice:

Goal: I want to get stronger this summer.

Better goal: By the 4th of July, I will be able to do 50 consecutive pushups.

Next- Make a Plan

Make a schedule that will enable you to hit this goal. Perhaps it’s 20 consecutive pushups, 3x a day, increasing reps week over week. If you’re not sure where to begin at the onset of your training or goal, you can consult the internet, a personal trainer or fitness advisor, or just learn by trial and error. If your goal is non-fitness related, e.g. maybe you want to read 10 books this summer, you can still make a schedule and alot time for yourself to read for one hour a day. Achieving a goal takes time and planning- do not skip this step!

Then- Honor Your Schedule

Marie Forleo said, “to be successful, keep your promises to yourself.”

Tip: establishing a routine, perhaps fitting in your round of pushups first thing in the morning, helps you to stick to your schedule and familiarize your mind and body with this new habit.

Last- Track Your Progress

Whether it’s putting pen to paper or tracking progress via your favorite fitness app, monitoring your growth is a key variable to transformative success and accountability. Creating tiered goals or milestones to hit on the way to your final goal helps to maintain motivation and momentum. Recognizing your progress leading up to your eventual goal is one of the more rewarding parts of reaching a goal.

Bonus- Reward Yourself

Incentivize yourself to hit your goals by rewarding yourself. Positive reinforcement can go a long way in keeping your motivation at a high. Invest in yourself, whatever that might look like.
